Left Lafayette, CA late Sat. afternoon, took I-80 through Sacramento (WAY too hot) Hwy 49 in Auburn. Continued on 49 past Downieville to Bassets, where I turned onto Gold Lakle Road. Camped in a USFS campground near Packer Lake. [Miles for the day: 200]
Sunday, 7-13-02.
Rode around on some dirt fire roads, got some decent scenary pics and a few of the KLR. Headed back to 49, continued east to 89 south towards Lake Tahoe. Stopped in Truckee for lunch. Saw an A10/A12-ish KLR loaded with gear parked at Burger King as I was leaving. Continued south slow along the west shore of LT - as expected on a beautiful summer Sunday afternoon, traffic was slow and heavy - didn't clear out until after the Ag. Inspec. Station just before 89 cuts off from Hwy 50. Continued on 89 throught Monitor pass to Hwy 395. Then south to 120 west through Yosemite. Just west of Buck Meadows I cut south on a county road that tied into Hwy 132 in Coulterville - twisty, scenic, minimal traffic, great road until Modesto. From there it was a pretty much STRAIGHT shot to I-580 and home. [Miles for the day: 450]
